Ah e-Bikes. “The closest you can get to a motorcycle without makin’ yo mamma cry.”

Thanks to Electra, I don’t need one anymore! With a 32 kilometer top out speed I’m moving faster than I normally pedal uphill all without having to break my “don’t go any faster than the speed you’re willing to crash at” rule.

The Townie Go!, much like it’s non-electric counterpart still comes with a lightweight aluminium frame and the same great flat foot technology that has made the regular Townies the best selling bike in North America. Couple that with the new mid-drive motor from Bosch, and you’re so balanced the Dalai Lama is coming to you for advice.

If you got the chance to take last years model for a spin, let me tell you, the new Townie Go for 2016 is a whole new animal. This year Electra has partnered with Bosch to bring you a compact but powerful 250 watt mid drive motor with an Intuvia control center and 4 different modes of assist; Eco, Tour, Sport and Turbo. That mid-drive motor also means you get to keep the Shimano 8 speed rear internal hub  and roller brakes for greater cruise control. Clean, compact and low maintenance, we love internal hubs!

The breakdown for the four modes of assist are as follows:

Eco: Effective support at maximum efficiency
Tour: Steady support for long tours
Sport: Immediate, powerful support for athletic riding off-road and in city traffic
Turbo: Direct, powerful support up to maximum cadence for athletic riding

This addresses my only complaint with the 2015 version, having multiple modes and a way to see them makes all the difference. Like the 2015 version it still has the “Get On and Go” throttleless system that adapts assistance based on cadence, but with the Intuvia control system you can also see your speed distance and battery power giving you a greater control over your ride.

And of course all the things that have made the Townie the best selling bike in North America are all still there, as well as integrated front and rear lighting powered by a Dynamo hub, fenders and rack and an Abus frame lock that is keyed alike with your battery for extra convenience.

Exciting, no? These babies are so hot Electra is already sold out until April in the US – the only way you’re going to get to see or try one of these before spring would be if we could get our hands on a demo unit before then…Which of course we did! It’s here now for the next week so DON’T WAIT!

Around this time of the year in Vancouver it can be hard to tell when it gets dark. Some days it feels like I’ve been waiting for the sun to rise all day. When the sun falls, so does visibility. Having  a good light (or a few!) will definitely help keep you seen and safer.

You may notice that several of these models, front and rear come with a reflective faceplate. All front lights are at least 80 lumens which is the perfect amount to see and be seen without blinding everyone you meet. The rear lights are at least 44 lumens, which is also enough to satisfy visibility without going overboard.  Most lights are USB rechargeable and come with several sizes of attachments for any kind of handlebar.

These sets from Knog are fun and cute.  They come as a front and rear set in cute colours for only $40! That’s pretty sweet! Well first of all, Schwalbe Balloon “Fat Frank” tires look incredibly handsome on just about any bike. Second, they’re made in Germany. Das ist gut, ja? Yes it is!

Traditionally, Cruiser bikes (and many comfort bikes) have Fat tires on them, but not so uber functional a tire as the Schwalbe Fat Frank. Standard fat tires have more rubber on the road; ergo more comfort and stability, but less speed.

Well, Fat meets Fast with Schwalbe’s Fat Frank Tires!   These tires have been specially designed so that they make your ride both smoother and faster, acting like a pneumatic cushion to absorb impacts. These lower air pressure, high volume tires actually have less roll resistance than standard skinny tires making them the Oxymoron of Bicycle Tires.

Lights!

Whether they’re a hard-core commuter, or a casual summer beach comber, any cyclist could use a little more light on their bike for Safety.   There have been so many advancements in lights over the last few years, including USB Rechargable lights and Wheel/Spoke Lights You almost can’t go wrong with your choice..

Gloves!

There are very few truly un-rideable days in Vancouver.  But, one thing that can make any fall or winter ride miserable, is not having a good pair of gloves (or 2 or 3).

Biking gloves vary widely depending on your need for wind, rain or cold protection, and one pair of gloves will probably not meet all of your needs.  Its important to have gloves that are designed for cycling that provide grip, so you won’t slip, have seems that won’t chafe, and won’t be too bulky, so you don’t lose your handlebar feel.

Baskets!

So many to choose from! The Gals AND Guys at Denman Bike Shop know their basket fashion, and can help you find a winner.

If you can’t bring in a picture, try to find out what model of bike it is, the colour(s) and check what the stem and handlebars look like.  Its also important to note if there are gear and brake cables.

A good multi-tool, and mini pump might not just save your day, you could save the day for someone else!  Being able to put some air in a flat tire, just to get to the bike shop, can make a real difference.
